Last night I cancelled a purchase of the Elektron Octatrack 2. I had one in the past and loved it, its what I used to write 'Until'. I vowed to one day get it back again, the reason to sell it was to fund a better sequencer (Squarp Pyramid) and to buy a cheap MPC. I planned to sell my now customised MPC and Squarp Pyramid yesterday to fund the new Octatrack.
The problem was, after reading forums late last night, I realised the Octatrack could never be the main sequencer hub of my studio due to its lack of more than 64 step sequencing and polyphony limitation. The Octatrack is king of the sampler sequencers but thats where is stops and other gear really is needed to compliment it. The Pyramid whilst having its limitations at least is a fully fledged sequencer so long compositions and passages are possible. I miss the mangling aspect of the Octatrack but at least the Digitakt is a cheaper option in the future maybe to replace the MPC? So the upshot is you cant really have one piece of kit trying to do several tasks as it just isn’t the way to go. Some overlapping occurs when building a hardware based studio and so you have to accept this and use it to your advantage and not worry about some redundancy and/or doubling of feature sets. My EP is available to stream via Spotify from Monday the 6th April! It is also avalaible to purchase on Bandcamp for a token or get it free! Hiphop breaks, experimental funk, House and Trance electronica..
Nov'19: Studio has eaten more cabling over the summer getting the workflow right but now all is online so to speak.. Excited about the new material bridging the gap between techno and acid rock. Still a some way to go to get the sound I am after but thats the fun of it all right?!
P.s God bless my MPC 1000 to assist with ideas and sketching. Rip Octatrack... For now at least..
